1. Define The Space
What we mean by this is before you start any work – decide what you’re going to do with space. Do you want a peaceful corner just for yourself or do you want a space where you can throw parties, have cookouts and spend time with your friends and family or even both. Knowing what you’re going to use it for will make it so much easier when you start making follow up decisions on the style, furniture, colour and so on.
2. Chose A Colour Palette
Deciding on the colourway of the whole outside living space is also very important. Ideally, you’d want it to match the look and feel of your home, so all of it feels like a cohesive unit. If you’re not looking to match, we’d recommend going with light, soft, pastel colours as they feel relaxing and warm. The dark colour palette could feel unwelcoming and it could get really hot during the summer.
Now, let’s talk about some of the stuff you could build or add to your outdoor living space.
3. Add A Hammock
It’s hard not to like hammocks. They bring a homey, relaxing vibe to any patio or a backyard. There aren’t a lot of things better than lounging in the hammock on a warm, sunny day, drinking your beverage of choice, listening to music, reading a book or just staring into the distance and letting your mind wander. Great think about them is that they work with any setting. You can have one on your patio or hanged between the trees in your backyard. Either way, they’re a welcome addition.
4. Add A Daybed
For those who would like some additional comfort in their outdoor space – a daybed is a great idea. Relaxing is what outdoor space is all about and it doesn’t get much relaxing than a daybed. You can even have a swinging one, which would kind of be like an ultimate hammock if you think about it. Throw some pillows and some blankets on there and you have yourself a nice little cosy place even when the colder days and nights come about.
5. Add A Dining Set
Some people prefer hanging out with a lot of friends instead of just lounging and enjoying some alone time. For those, a dining set is a must-have. Many would say that teak would be the perfect choice for an outdoor table and chairs setting and if you wish, you could read more about it, but basically, any quality set would be more than fine. Just imagine having your friend and family over for a nice, fun dinner or a cocktail party. All of you could sit around the table for hours and just talk and have fun.
6. Add Some Greenery
A simple idea to transform any outdoor space into something that looks and feels better is to add some greenery. You can plant some flowers, bushes, miniature trees or just add potted plants and flowers. If you have a patio, you can hang potted plants all over it and make the whole place just brighten up. Another thing you can do is hang some plants off of the patio canopy and liven up the some more. Don’t be afraid to go overboard – there’s no such thing as too much greenery in the backyard.
7. Add Some Lighting
One of the easiest ways to transform and upgrade your outdoor living space is to add some light to it. You’re going to be spending a lot of time outside during the night in the summer, so having some pretty lights certainly won’t hurt. You can add ceiling lamps, wall lamps, floor lamps, lanterns, candles – whatever comes to mind. The great thing about adding lights is that is both pretty and useful.
8. Pillows Upon Pillows
Much like greenery – you can never have too many pillows, Well, that’s a lie, you probably can – but you get the point. A couple of plush pillows here and there for additional comfort never hurt anybody. Pillows are a great accent piece for any lounging area and you can have them in all shapes, sizes and colours to liven the place up as much as you want. You can even have floor pillows on your deck and you and your friends can lounge bohemian style.
9. Create A Pond
If you have some spare time on your hands and you don’t mind getting your hands dirty – you could start a tiny DIY project. You can make a cute, little pond right in your backyard. Add a few rocks, make a tiny waterfall or even have some fish to swim in your little pond. In just a few days, you can create an actual oasis in your backyard.
10. Accessorize
To really take your outdoor living space to the next level – you can forget to accessorize. We’ve already mentioned pillows, but you can do so much more. Take patio for instance – you can add a nice, soft rug, you could add some tinny little sculptures here and there and make the whole thing unique and beautiful.
Now, picture this. You have friends and family over. The kids are swinging and giggling in the hammock, you and your friends are sitting at a table, just talking and drinking some cabernet under the lantern light. You’re surrounded with potted flowers hanging from the canopy, your friend is asking you about that interesting sculpture in the corner, the pond waterfall is babbling in the background and you’re just having a time of your life. If that sounds like fun – all you have to do is follow our tips and you live out that same evening in your own backyard.
